Some people go through a phase where every plant they touch - dies. I am in a phase where every computer I touch - dies. First, it was the office PC. What seemed to be a harmless link to classical music on 365live.com turned out to be malicious, very soon I was under the attack of a thousand Vundo Viruses... (stay away from 365live.com!!!!) Next it was the office laptop, as I went about chipping away on my paper, the laptop suddenly rebooted..and then came the omnious BIOS message - "System memory has changed, reducing available memory" !!!! David (our sys-support) tells me that a memory stick burnt up...WTF???.. Then David moves in a new desktop into my office, I login into it...the logon process is still in progress ( 2 weeks and waiting). Frustated, I go down to Cindy and get a laptop, things work fine for a day, day 2 - the network adapter doesn't work and wireless dies after 2 mins :((

Blogged with the Flock Browser

The week is not over yet and another tragedy strikes. Again this time, the tragedy is very very close to me.
A Blue Angels F/A-18 crashed during an air show in South Carolina killing the pilot as his family watched.

A piece of debris lying on a road near the crash site, you can clearly see the "Blue Angels" logo - April 21 2007

I have had a Blue Angels poster/pic in my bedroom since I was 11. The first poster was handed down by my brother and when I eventually trashed it (because it was in tatters) it it was well over 20 years old. Even now as I make this post, four high resolution pictures of the Blue Angels mark the wall behind me.

The team performed in NASJRB three years ago; and I pestered the hell out of a extremely busy but kind hearted soul to give me a 280 mile ride (140 miles to and fro - twice) to see them perform. When the Blue Angels eventually took to the skies, a cherished childhood dream came true. For the next twenty minutes, I glued my ears to the scanner and the eyes to the camera - and those were certainly one of the best moments of my life.

That day I suffered sun burns that took a week to heal, but the memories....they were etched for a lifetime!

-?-

The Virginia Tech massacre has shaken everybody. The gunman responsible has been identified as a person of South Korean descent. An Indian professor was killed in the bloodbath.

I closely work with a South Korean colleague - today he was almost choking when he learnt that the gunner was South Korean...he choked even more to learn about the Indian professor..Our pal works with a lot of Indian professors and grad students and is usually full of respect and admiration for their work...Today, he is taking it too hard on himself and his country. I tried my best to convince him that the world does not hate South Korea because of this.

What I suspected is true - I do derive energy ( and lots of it) from talking to people and having a simple drip coffee. The context...

The past few weeks, I noticed that I have been feeling more tired than usual. I would wake up feeling tired - even if I enjoyed a rare 8 hr quota of sleep. And the motors in my cranium seemed to have settled at a low first gear as opposed to being on the fourth - a constant monotonous drone instead of a more focussed drive. Was it stress ? Was it the sign of an impending burnout? Was it my diet? Was it the weather? What was it?

I guess I have my answers now - all these weeks I almost met nobody for the sole purpose of socializing. And that really had affected me. Today, I stopped my work ..dragged my colleague and his girlfriend to Starbucks and enjoyed coffee in the warm sun.. - there was work to be done - but I let it pile up as the clock ticked. The one hour we spent chatting, relaxing and staying away from work really really helped. I hope it helped them too...I am back now....with more focus and definately more energetic! So much so, I can prolly swing Shoaib Akthar for a six now - that is if I get a chance.
